Did you know that everyone takes things for granted in this world? You may not even realize you do it. But do you ever really stop to think about the sun coming up in the early morning or how the moon rises in the evening? These things are only some of what the scores of people on Earth take for granted. It’s not different than a baby shower being thrown and you knowing what to buy because you know it’s a boy or a girl. Yet, this is not always the case. More parents are opting to not to find out the sex of their baby until he or she is born. This leaves many baby shower guests heading out to buy a gift and not knowing what to get.

You must think back before the time of ultrasound machines because it has only been around for the last 25 to 30 years that we had this technology. What do you think people did then? Have we become that spoiled in learning what the sex of the baby is just to shop for what the baby will need?

Besides it has been known that ultrasounds are not 100 percent accurate. What could be mistake as a boy’s penis may actually be a girl with the umbilical cord between them. It is a possibility. Moms, Dads and even doctors have been tricked when going into the birthing/delivery room and getting the surprise that while they were preparing for a little Johnny, Emily was born instead. They even bought all boy clothes because that’s what they thought they were having.

Situations such as this should tell people that too many others are taking advantage of the technology that is out there. Even those who are not pregnant take advantage of it because it makes it easier to shop for the baby clothes. One suggestion to those who do not know what the expectant mother’s baby sex is…go buy neutral colors.

First off, avoid the pinks and blues entirely. This decides it is one over the other when this is not the case. Go with other colors. There are outfits coordinated in a unisex fashion, meaning greens, yellows and colors of such in between. Even red will do. Here is a hint: use the Mexico and Italy flags’ colors to help guide you to buy those unisex baby clothing. Oddly enough, pale blue clothing is okay for a girl. This color enhances certain features and can be used. However, with that being said, never place any type of pink on a boy. You cannot pass pink off as neutral. Remember no frilly type of outfits, as those tend to lean toward the female end of clothing.

You can always buy a gender specific outfit if you prefer and give the receipt to the mother-to-be if you wish. This is still acceptable! There are no guarantees that she will keep it and if you worked hard to find the gift, it was like wasting your time shopping.

The discovery that the purchase of extensive amounts of infant clothing is enough to sink R.H. Macy into bankruptcy usually comes long before your little bundle of joy blesses you with its first stinky diaper and spit-up soaked burp rag. Despite the fact that infant clothing uses less material than their oversized counterparts most manufacturers insist on charging twice the price. Since a typical baby goes through no fewer than seven changes of clothing throughout the course of a day, they’re only going to wear the clothes you buy them for a month or two and unless you happen to have the one husband in the world who can handle loading a washing machine and adding soap (and knows how to turn it on) you’re going to be way too tired to even consider doing laundry every day, you’re going to need to learn the Mom’s secret to buying infant clothing.

Since even Wal*Mart charges an arm and a leg for its infant clothing many new Moms find themselves at a complete loss when it comes to buying cheap. Well-meaning relatives who have more money than children will rave about the latest trends at Baby GAP and Gymboree, leaving you reeling and wondering if dropping thirty dollars on a Onesie is the kind of expense you’re going to be stuck with for the rest of your life. By the time your child becomes a teenager you’re going to be used to your wallet developing terminal spiderwebs, but until that point here are some of the most closely guarded secrets in the Mother/Baby world when it comes to buying infant clothing:

  1. Take advantage of your relatives. Shamelessly. Especially your parents. There is nothing that grandparents like better than to spoil the new baby, which makes them a tremendous resource for things like christening dresses, buntings and that diaper bag you just can’t live without.
  2. Take hand me downs where you can get them. Babies rarely wear out their clothing, and most moms are more than happy to clear out their outgrown clothes to make room for the new. If you can find a friend, neighbor or relative with an infant at least six months older than yours you could save hundreds of dollars on infant clothing.
  3. Buy it secondhand. There are three indisputable facts that you need to know about dressing your baby. One, they will only wear what you buy them for a very short period of time. Two, whatever you put on them they will throw up on (or at least dribble on) within the first two to three hours. Three, baby formula doesn’t wash out. Ever.
  4. If you don’t like the idea of shopping at Goodwill you can always take advantage of a consignment shop. Consignment shops are usually upper scale secondhand providers of children’s clothing. They are very picky about what they allow parents to sell, and nine times out of ten all of the stock in the store is as close to new as you can get without buying straight off the rack.
  5. Buy sparingly. When you have a new baby you want to have plenty of cute little outfits to show them off in. Just bear in mind that the baby will be spending far more time hanging out at home than out in public. Save your money and buy five or six cute outfits new for those trips to Grandma’s and the doctor’s office; baby will be happier in a Onesie and a sleeper at home anyway.

With those facts in mind it really doesn’t make sense to buy baby clothes new when there are so many great secondhand options available to you. Goodwill and the Salvation Army are prime dumping grounds for secondhand baby clothes, and since the workers are usually good about sorting out anything that’s stained or ripped they’re usually in good shape.

All babies from infants to toddlers love to play. By the way, in this article, infant means baby that is reaching 1 year of age, whereas toddler means baby from 1-4 years old. Babies of this age love to explore their surroundings and learn new things. They love to exercise all five senses: smell, taste, touch, hearing and sight. The focus is just playing and having fun every day.

Fortunately, there are wide range of toys that can satisfy and help babies to learn and develop these days. We will touch on some of the most popular ones.

Play gyms / play mats are great for both your infant and toddler. It has three dimensional play space and provides a very enriching environment for your baby to discover and learn. Most play gyms come with lights, sounds and colors to encourage your baby to exercise all their senses and perform coordinated movements.

Riding toys are great for toddlers that have endless supply of energy and desire to move around. Toddlers are particularly interested in riding toys that they can push with their feet rather than ones that need to be moved with peddles. They also love rocking riding toys.

Dolls and stuffed animals are also great toys for infants and toddlers. Young children like to imitate, these toys offer them a chance to model people’s behaviours and develop their people skills. For example, your baby might imitate feeding or rocking a doll.

Solid wooden block set that come with wide assortment of shapes, sizes and colors are great educational toys. It helps your baby to develop shape and color recognition, sorting skills and manual dexterity. Your baby can also use blocks to develop his or her tower building skill.

Babies love music, and love it even more when they can make the music themselves. Musical toys will keep them entertained while helping them develop skills in distinguishing sounds and finding music patterns. Some baby music set even come with a drum, trumpet and tambourine that can help spark your child’s imagination and provide a great fun learning experience.

Baby toys have gone electronic today. Electronic baby toys such as infant computers and toy mobile phones really help to build the baby’s imagination as well as to fine tune their hand-eye and motor coordination skills. A toy mobile phone helps babies model the discussions they hear around them and practice their expanding vocabulary. When they imagine calling people on a phone, they are developing their speech and social skills as well.

With an endless array of toys for infants and toddlers, the only problem for parents is how to narrow down the list. Put safety first when choosing toys for your little one. Whatever toys you choose, they have to pass the appropriate safety standard. In Europe, all toys should have the mark CE on it. If you don’t see that mark, don’t buy them. You don’t want to risk the safety of your baby.

Sometimes when you look at the whole range of baby toys available today and you wish you were baby once again :)
